Dental Implants

Restore the aesthetics and strength of your smile by replacing missing teeth with implants from All Smiles Dentistry in Rockville, MD!

What is a dental implant?

implantsA dental implant is used to replace a single missing tooth, or to secure an implant bridge if multiple teeth are missing. The implant itself is a replacement of the tooth root, generally made from titanium. An implant crown (the portion above the gum line) is the restoration that is attached to the implant.

The implant is placed in the jawbone with local anesthesia, though Dr. Ziomek offers several levels of sedation to meet your comfort level. The implant placement takes about an hour. In many cases, we can place the implant restoration on the same day as the implant placement.

Mini-implants are very affordable and can be used to secure existing dentures or new dentures.  Mini-implants do not require as much surgery or healing time and are usually fully functional the same day they are placed!

The same day after your implant is placed, you will be able to go back to your everyday activities. There are a few dietary restrictions for the first week, but after that, you can resume your normal diet.

Once your dental implant restoration is completed, it is imperative that the area be kept clean to prevent infection. Dental implants can accumulate plaque and tartar just as teeth can. Whether only one tooth is replaced by an implant, or several teeth – or even all your teeth – professional cleanings at our Rockville, MD dental office will be necessary to keep your implants and surrounding tissues healthy.

Implants vs. Bridges or DenturesX-ray of an implant in position

  • Regular dentures and bridges can be unstable because they are not fixed to the bone.  This can make it hard to eat and difficult to smile with confidence.
  • Implants look much more natural and feel and act much more like normal teeth, with the ability to bite harder.
  • Implants are supported by bone rather than by neighboring teeth, so they don't compromise the health of your other natural teeth.
  • Bridges may only last seven to ten years, perhaps even less if there is a root canal, whereas implants will typically last a lifetime.

Advanced Implant Services

Sometimes, getting a dental implant requires pre-treatment to ensure the proper amount of jaw bone is present. Our advanced implant services include:

Sinus Lift Augmentation: Often after upper back teeth are lost, the sinuses will enlarge. This can preclude placement of dental implants in that area, because the sinus is filled with air and dental implants need to be surrounded by solid bone. The solution is a “sinus lift augmentation,” which is a bone graft that can restore the sinus cavity to its original size and augment the bone to replace what was lost as a result of the enlarged sinus. This new bone graft typically needs to heal for nine to 12 months before it is strong enough to install the dental implants. Today’s sinus lifts are not as invasive as those of years gone by. Therefore, recovery is usually uneventful.

Autogenous Bone Grafting: Occasionally, there is an insufficient amount of bone in the spot which would otherwise be ideal for a dental implant.  In these cases, bone can be “borrowed” from another part of your mouth and grafted into the deficient area. The best place to borrow from is usually the chin or the back of the jaw where your wisdom teeth used to be.

Implant Site Development: When a tooth has to be extracted because of infection, it is not uncommon to have a loss of bone around the tooth because of the infection. In these situations, it is possible to do a bone graft at the same time as the tooth is removed and thereby facilitate the placement of a dental implant at a later date.
